BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — UROY Harris of Newton Ground has been convicted and sentenced for Causing Death by Careless Driving following a tragic accident that claimed the life of 89-year-old Olivia Francis in 2018.
The sentencing took place before His Lordship Justice Iain Morley KC at the High Court in Basseterre. Harris had pleaded guilty to the offence earlier this year, on January 30, 2025.
On June 24, 2025, the court handed down a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. Harris was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for one year, effective immediately.
As part of the sentencing, Harris was ordered to pay $65,000 XCD in compensation to the family of the deceased. The payment is to be made in monthly instalments of $1,800, beginning Friday, July 25, 2025, and continuing on the last Friday of each month. Failure to meet the payment schedule will result in a 12-month custodial sentence, after which payments must continue. A status review has been set for Friday, December 12, 2025.
Although the accident occurred nearly seven years ago on November 8, 2018, in Newton Ground, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force said the case reflects its ongoing commitment to holding traffic violators accountable.
The Force is again reminding motorists to drive responsibly and with care, especially as road accidents continue to rise across the Federation.
