BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DUBBED “A Celebration Without End”, the 2009/2010 National Carnival culminated on Saturday (Jan. 2) with an array of colours, gyrations, music and excitement in the streets of Basseterre.
The parade days, held on New Year’s Day and Saturday (Jan. 2), saw three major troupes participating in the activities - ‘Viva Las Vegas’ presented by ‘Inferno’, ‘Liamuiga’ (History and Culture) presented by ‘Banker’s Mas Camp, and ‘Clowning Around’ by Christine Walwyn.
The Children’s Parade, which was scheduled for December 31, was short-lived due to the inclement weather. It parade started from the Patsy Allers playing field but had to be abandoned shortly after passing Greenlands. Therefore, it was rescheduled for the following day and the children came and paraded with the older folks.
The Children’s Parade Troupe was dubbed “Colour Me Fantastic” and featured five zones. Zone One was ‘Paint Me A Rainbow’, Zone Two ‘Hue-Mania’, Zone Three ‘Colours Do Compliment’, Zone Four ‘Kaleidoscope’ and Zone five was ‘Monochromatic Splendour’.
Both parade days featured over six bands and a number of Hi-Fis and were completed with masqueraders, clowns, mock jumbies, bulls, acrobats and some individuals who added their taste of culture along with winners of the various Carnival Shows on trucks.
At the end of the parade, Banker Mas Camp’s Liamuiga (History & Culture) was adjudged the Largest Troupe, Most Colourful Troupe and Queen of the Band, making it the first place winner with 253.5 points.
Clowning Around came in second and Viva Las Vegas copped the third prize and also that of King of the Bands.
