Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal. Monday, July 28, 2025 — The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Global Campus is deeply saddened by the passing of Her Excellency Angela Missouri Sherman-Peter. She served for many years as an outstanding and distinguished diplomat and a respected senior government representative in her country, The Bahamas.

During her long and distinguished career in diplomacy, public service, international organisations, and executive management, Ambassador Sherman-Peter held several prominent leadership roles. These included Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Special Envoy, Chef de Cabinet to the President of the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, and High Commissioner and Consul General, to name a few. From 1994 to 1997, she also served as Assistant Director/Special Adviser in the Political Affairs Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

In 2015, she was the honorary graduate of The UWI Global Campus (formerly The UWI Open Campus) and was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) by The University of the West Indies in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the Region and internationally. Her areas of expertise included crime prevention and criminal justice with a focus on international narcotics control and gender affairs. In 2013, she was honoured with the Pelican Award from The UWI Alumni Association, New York Chapter, in recognition of her distinguished career and remarkable accomplishments in diplomacy and public service.

Ambassador Sherman-Peter leaves behind a legacy of excellence, leadership, and service that will continue to inspire the Region and beyond. Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Francis O. Severin reminisces his interview, when he was Campus Public Orator, with Ambassador Sherman-Peter, in preparation for composing her citation. She spoke with nostalgia about her UWI lecturers, he recalls. She relished those days in the lecture halls and tutorials of Roy Augier, Edward Kamau Brathwaite, Elsa Goveia, Douglas Hall, K. O. Laurence, Woodville K. Marshall, Orlando Patterson and Bill Riviere. Dr Severin is sure that one could not have found a prouder UWI alumna. The Principal and Global Campus Senior Management Team extend sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.
