CHARLESTOWN, Nevis-THE Nevis Cycle & Triathlon Club rolled out its 2010 season with a nail biter of a first race on Saturday (Jan. 2), as reigning national champion Reggie Douglas retained his status as the Federation’s best on two wheels.

The 30k race consisted of three laps along the Cattle Long Path to the St. James Anglican Church and featured many of the top cyclists from Nevis as well as some new faces.

Douglas once again proved the main attraction in the race, but he was given a formidable challenge by James Weekes throughout the race.

Weekes was leading the pack by a narrow margin on the first lap of the race, but Douglas managed to regain control in the battle through lap two and went on to win the race with a time of 1:02.54.

The runner-up position was filled by Weekes as he came in one second behind Douglas. Both men faced a surprising challenge from 14-year-old Assim Chapman, who despite his tender age closed in on the front of the pack in the final two laps and took third place with a time of 1:02.56.

The women’s category was won by Monica Ceccon, who finished with a time of 1:02.57 thanks to a very consistent pace throughout.

Apart from the race’s top finishers, the field was filled with strong performances from Winston Crooke, Shaun Brear, Greg Phillip, Edion Gumbs and Jamie Holmes. Royston Queeley and Alex Isles also contested the race, but did not finish.

The racing season will continue this Saturday (Jan. 9) in Nevis with a three lap race along the Cattle Long Path to Prison Farm.

The month will then culminate with the Oualie Beach/TDC 20k Time Trial on January 23 and the Oualie Beach Mini-Triathlon on January 30.
