WASHINGTON, DC – COLOMBIAN Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, a presidential hopeful, has died two months after being shot while campaigning for his party’s nomination.
According to the Associated Press, his family confirmed he passed away today from injuries sustained during the June attack, in which he was shot in the head and neck. The 39-year-old had been hospitalized since the incident.
The Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General expressed deep sorrow over his death in a statement.
"Senator Uribe’s dedication to democratic principles, public service, and the defense of his convictions made him a respected voice in Colombia’s political life and a valued member of the inter-American democratic community. His tragic death, the result of an act of violence, is a profound loss for Colombia and for all who believe in dialogue, tolerance, and the peaceful resolution of differences," the statement read.
The OAS also extended condolences to Uribe’s family and the Colombian people.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro was among the first to react publicly, posting on X:
My sincere condolences to the family of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, and to all Colombians,” he wrote in part on his X account. “Life is above any ideology."
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also shared his condolences on X:
“Deeply saddened to learn of Colombian Senator @MiguelUribeT's tragic death. The United States stands in solidarity with his family, the Colombian people, both in mourning and demanding justice for those responsible.”
Regional and international leaders have also expressed their sympathies. Investigations into the shooting remain ongoing.
