Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal. Monday, August 11, 2025 — The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Global Campus is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Darren Leon as Chief Financial Officer for the academic year 2025/2026. This appointment took effect on August 1, 2025. In early 2024, he served in this capacity from January to March, demonstrating his ability to lead at the highest levels of financial governance.

His service with the Global Campus began on October 12, 2020, when he was appointed Financial Manager –Treasury and Risk Management at the Office of Finance, Trinidad and Tobago. With over 17 years of diverse experience in financial management, retail operations, hedge fund accounting, merchant banking, and financial control, he has built a strong track record for delivering targets both locally and internationally.

Prior to his current role, Mr. Leon served as Financial Controller at Rentokil-Initial (Trinidad) Limited—a subsidiary of the UK-based Rentokil Initial Group. There, he was instrumental in driving revenue, profit, and cash flow targets for the Trinidad and Tobago business while ensuring risk management and regulatory compliance in alignment with local legislation and Rentokil Initial UK Group standards. His extensive career also includes senior finance leadership roles at prominent organisations such as ANSA Merchant Bank (Trinidad), BML Do It Best Corp (Turks and Caicos Islands), and Citi Hedge Fund Services – Citigroup (Bermuda).

A Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) since 2011 and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Trinidad and Tobago (ICATT), Mr. Leon brings deep expertise in financial strategy, risk management, and treasury operations.

He actively supports professional development initiatives, occasionally serving as a guest tutor for Financial Management Continuing and Professional Development courses at the Global Campus Site in The Bahamas.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Francis O. Severin discloses that Mr Leon’s appointment to act in this critical role in a year of transformation, which includes, inter alia, the Rightsizing Strategy; the establishment of the International School for Development Justice (ISDJ) within the Global Campus; and the Campus’ execution of the process of Re-Accreditation, is fundamental validation of our confidence in his abilities and expertise. “Aside from his manifest and evident financial management skills, Darren brings to the table a high degree of social capital and emotional intelligence, which makes working with him a pleasant and collegial experience. I believe both internal and external customers will vouch for this”, added Dr Severin. Principal Severin and the Global Campus Senior Management Team congratulate Mr Leon on this appointment and wish him success in this role.
