By: Sharlene Martin, Sknvibes.com

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - A young male Ramsbury, Charlestown resident was today (Jan. 5) fined $1 600 for possession of cannabis.

Appearing before Magistrate Yasmine Clarke at the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court, Donford Martin pleaded guilty to the drug possession charge and was given three months to pay the fine or spend a similar period in prison.

According to the facts of the case, on December 19, 2009, while on duty in the Ramsbury area, officers of the Charlestown Police Station saw the convicted man acting in a suspicious manner.

The officers approached and told Martin that they suspected him of having drugs and ammunition in his possession and would have liked to search his person. During the search, the officers found on him a transparent plastic bag containing a quantity of leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis.

When questioned on the contents of the bag, Martin said, “Officer it is a little local bush.” He was arrested and charged on reaching the station, where the “little local bush” was ascertained to be cannabis.

Meanwhile, information reaching SKNVibes stated that Leon Gumbs of Brown Pasture, Nevis was arrested and charged for wounding a police officer while the lawman was executing his duties on New Year’s Day.

It is understood that the incident took place during a search of Gumbs’ home, where the police found one round of ammunition. He was charged for the two offences and is scheduled to appear before Magistrate Clarke tomorrow (Jan. 6) to seek bail.

And in relation to the New Year’s Day shooting-death of Keithon Stanley and the gun-related wounding of Bevon Richards, Inspector Andre Mitchell informed that investigations are ongoing.
