Man hospitalised following traffic accident on Bypass Road

Drain in which road worker fell

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A male road worker is nursing undisclosed injuries at the Joseph N. France Hospital after he was involved in a traffic accident on the West Basseterre Bypass Road earlier today (Jan. 6).

The incident occurred this morning on a stretch of the bypass road immediately following the Camps roundabout. According to eyewitness reports, taxi bus TA163, driven by Trevon Rogers of Sandy Point, entered the bypass from that roundabout and was speeding along the road.

The worker, who bystanders claimed was of Spanish descent, had been placing traffic cones in the centre of the road. When he saw the bus approaching him, he began running to the right side of the road, ostensibly to avoid a collision.

Nonetheless, the vehicle smashed into him head-on and propelled his body forward into the stone wall bordering the road. He then fell into the drain, where he remained until an Emergency Medical Service Unit transported him to the JNF Hospital.

An unhurt Rogers fled the scene, and this media house observed his taxi parked on College Street Ghaut an hour after the accident occurred. Aside from a slightly shattered windshield, the bus did not appear to have sustained any other damage.

SKNVibes contacted the Traffic Department’s Sergeant Calvin Amory, who confirmed eyewitness reports of the accident, but declined to give the name of the injured party.

“Police responded to a call at 9:26 a.m. and the information gathered at scene was that a taxi bus struck a worker and fled the scene. They found the driver of the vehicle in the Basseterre area and he is now in police custody.

“He has not been charged yet, but investigations into the matter are ongoing. The injured worker is in the hospital at this time.”
