From the office to the stage: Sashone Mitchell charts her own musical path

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER years of working behind a desk, either inputting data or serving customers in St. Kitts and Nevis, Jamaica-born musician Sashoné  Mitchell has stepped into the spotlight of the music industry, determined to follow her true calling.

Mitchell, who once called St. Kitts home, has released her latest song and music video, 'Shadows of Grace', a tribute to ordinary working people and the daily struggles they endure.

Speaking with SKNVibes Entertainment, Mitchell explained the inspiration behind the song.

“You know when you pull up to a stoplight and someone offers you a service, like cleaning your windshield, and you give them a little change? There’s no set price—they’re just trying to get by. That touched and inspired me. It reflected the daily struggles of life: the mother who leaves early to work a 10 or 11-hour shift at a factory. This song, and the video, were inspired by people like them.”

Now back in Jamaica, Mitchell said being home has opened her eyes creatively to her own potentials.

“When I just got back to Jamaica, I would watch people closely—what they were doing, what they might be feeling. Somehow all of that inspired Shadows of Grace. It’s not just Jamaica either; these are people you see everywhere—people selling bag juice, clothes on the roadside, doing what they can to survive.”

Having spent much of her adult life abroad, including in St. Kitts and the United States, Mitchell said the journey home was also a journey inward.

“For a long time, I felt like I had no identity. I wanted to figure out who I truly am, so I decided to travel and see more of life. Jamaica is home, but I left at 18 and never experienced it as an adult. Coming back allowed me to reconnect with my roots and enter creative spaces.”

She recalled being invited to a studio session with a friend, which reignited her passion for performing.

“When I saw what he (promoter) was doing with his band, I felt drawn to it. I didn’t plan to start music immediately, but I knew I wanted to be part of it. I shared one of my songs with a producer who got really excited about it—that was the spark.”

Looking ahead, Mitchell says her goal is not just success, but impact the lives of those with whom she is in contact.

“I see myself sharing messages like Shadows of Grace with the world. I’ve come to understand how spiritual music really is. It’s not just something people listen to and walk away from—it influences us. It changes energy. That’s the mission.”

When asked about the competitive nature of the Jamaican music industry, she responded with calm certainty.

“I don’t really worry about that. I believe it’s inevitable—based on my mission, my vision, and the energy behind it. Things are already happening, even if it doesn’t look that way yet.”

As she continues charting her own path with her soulful reggae, Mitchell hopes her journey will inspire others who are also trying to find their voice within the industry.

It is always inspiring to see young artistes rise above life’s hurdles to create something meaningful—not just for themselves, but for others walking a similar path.
