Police probing viral video; faith leaders condemn public indecency

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — THE Police Force’s Special Victims Unit (SVU) has launched an investigation into a disturbing video involving a minor that has been circulating on social media.

The video, believed to have been recorded at the Ferry Terminal, has sparked widespread outrage across the Federation and prompted swift condemnation from the authorities.

In a weekend statement, the Police Force urged anyone with information to come forward, writing in part on social media: “We've seen the video circulating, and it is absolutely unacceptable. Our Special Victims Unit has opened an immediate investigation. If you have any information, PLEASE come forward. Every detail helps.”

On Monday, the Police again took to social media to warn that they will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to public indecency throughout the Christmas–Carnival season.

"...In light of recent incidents of public indecency occurring in public spaces, including the Basseterre Ferry Terminal… the public is firmly reminded that behaviour of this nature is not only inappropriate, but illegal. The law is explicit, and enforcement will be strict,” the advisory stated.

The warning referenced the Small Charges Act (2017), CAP. 4.36, which outlines several offences related to public misconduct, including:

    1. Incorrigible Rogues – Section 30
Individuals deemed “incorrigible rogues” may face imprisonment for up to six months.

    2. Indecent Behaviour – Section 31(1)
Anyone behaving indecently in a public place may be jailed for up to one month.

    3. Indecent Exhibition – Section 31(3)
Those who expose obscene material or their person in public may be deemed “rogues and vagabonds” and face up to three months’ imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Ecclesiastical and Faith-Based Affairs, the St. Kitts Evangelical Association, the Christian Council, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church issued a joint statement condemning the video.

“Such actions have no place in our public spaces and do not reflect the moral and spiritual values of St. Kitts and Nevis,” the groups said. “As a nation rooted in Christian principles, we are called to uphold decency, self-respect, and respect for others.”

They added that public conduct should “honor God, protect our children, and preserve the dignity of our communities,” urging all citizens to behave responsibly and in a manner befitting the country’s faith-based heritage.
