BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — THE St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) and Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre have secured another term in office following yesterday’s general election, with the party winning 14 of the 17 seats contested.
According to the final tally, the Allan Chastanet-led United Workers Party (UWP) won one seat, while two Independent candidates aligned with the SLP captured the remaining two seats.
The victory marks the first time in a decade that an incumbent party has been re-elected in St. Lucia.
Speaking with reporters after the win, Prime Minister Pierre said he felt “very relieved.” He told local media that he “humbly accepts” the renewed mandate from the people of St. Lucia, noting that the SLP increased its seat count by one.
“I am fortunate to have the confidence of the people of St. Lucia — not only as a Parliamentary Representative, but also first as a minister and now as Prime Minister,” he stated.
Pierre had been hoping to avoid the recent fate of his regional colleague in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who was recently unseated.
