Happy New Year... says Alternate Commonwealth Youth Ambassador, AZARD GUMBS, on behalf of the Commonwealth Youth Programme

Azard Gumbs
Press Release

As we roll the curtains down on 2009 and celebrate the dawn of a new year, we must first give thanks and praise to the Almighty God. Through His never-ending love and protection, we, as the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, can celebrate the start of a new era with renewed hope and vigor. Truly, we have many things to be thankful for. However, in the midst of all the festivities, I implore that we take a glimpse into the past year, with the view of ensuring that the mistakes of the past are not repeated and that we strive for excellence in this coming year.

As a young man and I think I speak for all young people when I say that the increase in the number of homicides, and other youth related crimes, are indeed saddening, especially when compared to the figures to 2008, and the years before. As a nation, we sympathize with those who have lost a loved one and those who were made victims by these heinous crimes.

Clearly, in the eyes of many it appears that the youth of today and indeed our nation have gone astray, this is certainly not so! As such, it is important that we acknowledge the positive contributions of our young people, especially those who have decided to uphold the rule of law, while they battle the tough global economic situation, and for this we salute them.

Moreover, it is important that we acknowledge the potential of the youth of our Federation. As young people, we must realize that we account for over fifty percent (50%) of our population; therefore the success of our nation is dependent on us. We can make a positive difference in our nation. Now is the time for us to realize the potential that lies within us.

Throughout the past year we have displayed our talents in varying disciplines; the demonstration of our young people in sports, educational achievements and programs, debates, cultural exhibitions, the production of songs and music videos and the involvement in community groups and Church organizations as leaders, cannot be overrated. We must also recognize those who have resorted to improving the socioeconomic conditions by engaging in the spirit of entrepreneurship, rather than turning to illegal means of earning a livelihood, for this we tip our hats to them.

As young people we must not allow the negative lyrics by some of our popular local and foreign artists to be key ingredient in shaping our thoughts thus hindering our journey to success. Those of us who listened to the junior calypso monarch competition, I am sure you were impressed with the performances of the junior calypsonians and the deep messages that they conveyed. Many of their renditions specifically dealt with the issue of crime and violence urging their fellow young people to resolve their difference peacefully, by highlighting the negative impact of criminal activities. With the talents that we possess as young people I encourage us to make positive impact on our nation. I encourage us to make a positive difference in the lives of persons within our community and to stand tall as agents of change within our society.

In closing, as we welcome the new year let us continue to strive as a nation where youth are actively involved in all aspects of nation building, as we strive to become the leaders of tomorrow. As we press throughout this year let us keep in mind the motto of our Federation...”Country Above Self” and in all things “PUT GOD FIRST”.

I am 20 year old Azard Gumbs, the alternate Commonwealth Youth Ambassador of St. Kitts and Nevis, and I say to you: Happy New Year!
