Mottley, BLP returned to government in Barbados after snap elections

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — PRIME Minister Dr Terrance Drew has congratulated Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) on their victory in Wednesday’s snap general elections, securing a third consecutive term in office.

In a social media post Thursday (Feb. 12) morning, Dr Drew wrote: “On behalf of the Government and People of St. Kitts and Nevis, we extend warmest congratulations to Prime Minister Mia Mottley and the Barbados Labour Party on their successful election victory.”

He said the outcome reflects the “confidence of the people of Barbados in your leadership and vision,” and commended Mottley’s continued dedication to advancing the interests of her nation and strengthening unity within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Thousands of Bajans turned out to vote across 30 constituencies on Wednesday. When the ballots were counted, the BLP recorded another clean sweep, winning all 30 seats and keeping the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) out of Parliament.

Supporters dressed in red celebrated in the streets and gathered at Grantley Adams House, where Mottley announced that Friday would be observed as a national holiday.

Mottley is widely regarded as one of the region’s most articulate leaders and has gained popularity both within the Caribbean and internationally.

The DLP had expressed confidence ahead of the polls and maintained it had a path to unseat the administration. However, party sources told SKNVibes News that significant work remains if the party is to rebuild competitiveness, including reshaping its public image.

Dr Drew also noted that he looks forward to deepening the strong ties between the two countries and continuing collaboration within CARICOM, “in the spirit of friendship, mutual respect, and shared progress.”
