St. Kitts and Nevis advancing Major Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicle Push

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

WASHINGYON, DC -- ST. Kitts and Nevis is accelerating its transition toward clean energy and sustainable development, with several new policies, projects and regional partnerships now underway.

Over the past year, the Federation has moved to strengthen its national energy strategy while aligning with broader hemispheric goals focused on climate resilience, renewable energy and sustainable growth.

Cabinet has approved a comprehensive Electric Vehicle Transition Policy and Action Plan, setting out a clear roadmap for sustainable transportation in the country. The policy outlines how the Federation intends to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while encouraging the adoption of electric mobility.

In addition, the Government has launched the Solar Rise Programme — an initiative designed to incentivise the installation of rooftop photovoltaic systems. The programme also introduces a mechanism allowing households and businesses to receive payment for surplus energy fed back into the national grid.

Officials say this approach empowers consumers to become active participants in the clean energy transition, while strengthening national energy security.

Beyond policy reforms, the Federation has also placed emphasis on public engagement and capacity building.

This year, the annual Career Day initiative was expanded into a three-day event for students across the country. Under the theme “Powering the Future: Your Role in the Energy Revolution,” students were introduced to careers in the energy sector and engaged directly with industry professionals.

During CARICOM Energy Month, national activities were also held under the regional theme “Invest, Innovate, Sustain: Leading the Charge in Renewable Energy Frontiers,” reinforcing the Federation’s leadership role in regional cooperation.

At the sub-regional level, work has begun within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States on a new energy “greenprint” — a roadmap initiated by the Federation’s Minister of Energy in his capacity as Chair of the OECS Committee of Energy Ministers. The initiative is aimed at harmonising and accelerating the region’s energy transition.

Meanwhile, one of the most transformative undertakings remains geothermal energy development on Nevis — a project expected to significantly reshape the country’s renewable energy landscape.

Several supporting projects and international partnerships are also in progress. These include a microgrid installation funded by the Government of Taiwan, solar photovoltaic systems under the SKN-100 project, and additional solar investments backed by the Government of India.

The Federation has also received technical and financial support from partners including the European Union, the World Bank, and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, among others. These collaborations are helping to strengthen grid resilience and expand renewable energy penetration across the twin-island state.

Officials say St. Kitts and Nevis remains committed to advancing renewable energy, electric mobility, energy efficiency and climate resilience — not only for its own citizens, but as part of a shared responsibility across the Americas.

With continued collaboration, investment and innovation, leaders believe the region can emerge as a global model for a just and sustainable energy transition.
