BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has joined regional leaders in calling for restraint amid escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Over the weekend, US and Israeli forces launched large-scale strikes inside Iran, targeting what officials described as critical military and strategic sites. The attacks reportedly resulted in significant casualties. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on US military bases across the Middle East and on facilities in allied Gulf states, including Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, further widening the conflict.
In a statement issued today (Mar. 2), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Federation is deeply concerned over "the recent attacks in the Middle East” and reaffirmed its commitment to “international peace, respect for territorial integrity, and the sanctity of human life.”
Casualty figures continue to rise as the conflict spreads. Israeli forces are now reportedly conducting strikes in Lebanon, while in Iran, deaths have climbed past 200, according to international media reports. Despite mounting losses, Iran has continued its bombardment in parts of the Gulf region.
Against that backdrop, St. Kitts and Nevis said it stands “in solidarity with the Governments and people of the Gulf Cooperation Council states and others who have been affected by the current developments in the region.”
The Federation urged all parties to pursue constructive dialogue aimed at de-escalation and lasting peace.
“We believe that diplomacy, mutual respect, and adherence to international law remain the only viable path to stability and security,” the statement added.
The call for restraint comes as regional governments take varying positions on the conflict. In a separate statement, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago expressed support for the actions of the United States, stating that it backs efforts aimed at preventing “oppressive regimes” from acquiring nuclear weapons capabilities that could threaten international peace and security.
Meanwhile, the Government of Guyana condemned Iran’s reported attacks on Gulf states, describing them as “unprovoked” and a breach of international law. Guyana also expressed solidarity with countries including the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain and Qatar.
The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts intensifying even as military operations continue.
