2010 track and field season kicks off this weekend

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-ALL athletes and member clubs of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association (SKNAAA) are being asked to attend the first development meet for the 2010 season tomorrow (Jan. 9) at the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Stadium.

     

    Though the meet was originally scheduled to be held at the Saddlers Playing Field, SKNAAA Public Relations Officer Evris Huggins informed that it had to be moved due to the Saddlers field not being ready yet.

     

    Competition will start sharply at 3 p.m., with transportation to the stadium being provided from the Basseterre Ferry Terminal on the Bay Road at 2:30.

     

    Events scheduled to be held at the first development meet of the year include male and female Shot Put, 800m, 200m, male and female Discus, 400m, 100m, under-13 1200m, 1500m and a potential 4 x 100m relay.

     

    Track and field fans in the general public are also encouraged to attend the meet so as to encourage the nation’s young athletes as they embark on a busy year for the sport.

     

    Development meets and Sports Days for both the primary and secondary schools will be held throughout January, February and March to prepare the nation’s youth for regional and international competition later in the season.

     

    Among the high profile events in the packed schedule this year are the National Junior Championships & CARIFTA Trials, World Indoor Championships and TDC/Coca-Cola Interschool Championships in March.

     

    The CARIFTA Games will take place this year from April 2-5 in the Cayman Islands, followed by the Leeward Islands vs. Windward Islands in the British Virgin Islands.

     

    June will feature the CAC Junior Championships, the National Invitational Championships and the Titans Grand Prix in Nevis, while July will be non-stop action thanks to the NACAC U-23 Championships, IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada, the Caribbean Union of Teachers Games in St. Kitts and the CAC Senior Championships in Puerto Rico.

     

    August highlights for the Federation include the inaugural Youth Olympic Games and the World University Games in China before the season culminates with the much anticipated hosting of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India from September 3-14.
