BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 2009-2010 National Carnival Celebrations of St. Kitts and Nevis occurred with many amazing and memorable moments that will be in the hearts of the people and visitors for a very long time.
Whether it was the historical crowning of the two queens for the Digicel Haynes Smith Miss Caribbean Pageant or when the Nu Vybes Band made their way up Fort Street ‘mashing dung tung’ with a massive crowd for J’Ouvert, or perhaps when the Road March victory went to Grand Masters Band, Carnival 09-10 will not be forgotten anytime soon.
SKNVibes spoke with a number of persons who shared their Carnival highlights with us:
Kadeen Tyson: “My highlight of Carnival 2009\2010 was the troupes and ‘paraders’ and those who took part in dance and appearances. I also was amused by the various shows,” he said.
Michelle said that every year she looks forward to Carnival to participate in the grand parade. “I was stunned that this year Inferno did not come out on top for the Best Troupe awards. I was really shocked,” she said.
Shauna Clarke declared that seeing Socrates capture the calypso monarch for the fifth time just before his retirement was a great feeling. “Plus, I enjoyed seeing Lord Kut perform ‘Ho-mea’, especially when he stood directly in front of a judge by the name of Hermia and began pointing on her. She was laughing and playing along with him, that’s what we call kaiso!” she said.
Kendra Gumbs said her Carnival highlight was when the Grand Masters Band retained the Road March title.
“It was when the undisputed best, Grand Masters, buss all a dem bubble. Road March back to back to back…nar switch win or lose.”
“I enjoyed every part of Carnival. My favorite part was J’Ouvert of couse. The way that we are able to just dance openly in the street is lots of happiness,” said Chazzette Mills.
The Carnival highlight for Jervin Nisbett was also the J’Ouvert celebration.
“J’Ouvert was crazy! Music was nice and I enjoyed seeing all the faces I haven’t seen for a while. This was the most peaceful sessions we’ve had in years,” he said.
