Youth Advocate Darin Connor captures Development Bank’s 2025 Mental Health Grant

By: (DBSKN), Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts – [March 16th, 2026] -- The Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis (DBSKN) has officially named A young national advocate, Mr. Darin Connor as the recipient of its 2025 Mental Health Grant, valued at XCD$10,000, recognizing his leadership, advocacy, and commitment to strengthening mental health systems locally and regionally.

For Mr. Connor, a Psychology major and Political Science minor at the University of the Virgin Islands, the Mental Health Grant represents far more than financial support. Reflecting on the recognition, he noted that the awardnaffirms the importance of continuing to normalize conversations around mental health and advocating for greater understanding and support within communities.

“This mental health grant means more than money; it is an objective, external vote of confidence that confirms a growing societal need to desensitize and make conversations about mental health ordinary rather than exceptional,” Connor explained. “Coming from a background where higher education was not the norm and where imposter syndrome often felt like a constant companion, this recognition says plainly that the academic and professional world sees my perspective as valuable. It strengthens my resolve to continue my studies, build knowledge, and stand as proof that barriers can be overcome through purpose and perseverance.”

Connor currently serves as the LUIx–UNICEF Mental Health Focal Point for St. Kitts and Nevis, representing the Federation across more than twenty Caribbean countries. His work has included helping to develop youth mental health resources, engaging regional partners, and advocating for stronger psychosocial support systems for young people. His leadership journey also includes serving as Vice President of the Student Government Association, where he championed student wellness initiatives and peer support programs.

According to Ms. Chantelle Rochester, Integrated Marketing and Communications Manager and coordinator of the grant, the process ensures that recipients reflect both merit and mission. “This grant is designed to identify individuals who are not only academically strong but who have already demonstrated leadership and commitment to improving mental health outcomes,” Rochester said. “Mr. Connor represents the future of mental health leadership in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The initiative also reflects the Bank’s evolving role beyond traditional financing, positioning it as a catalyst for social transformation and human capital development. “Development is not measured solely in infrastructure or financial growth,” added General Manager Laurinston Matthew. “It is measured in the strength, health, and capacity of our people. Mr. Connor has demonstrated exceptional promise, and we are proud to support his continued growth and contribution to our nation.”

As DBSKN continues to expand its role in advancing national priorities, it extends appreciation to all applicants and promises that the Mental Health Grant will continue to stand as a powerful reminder that investing in people remains one of the most meaningful and lasting forms of development.
