March 20th, 2016 -- On March 18, Ambassador Edward Ling-wen Tao attended the official opening ceremony of the recycling facility at the Conaree Landfill, held under the “Solid Waste Management and Recycling Project (Let’s Recycle in St. Kitts and Nevis)” implemented by the Taiwan Technical Mission of the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF). The event marked a significant milestone in environmental cooperation between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis.
The ceremony celebrated the completion of the facility’s expansion and the commissioning of a new horizontal baler, which will significantly enhance recycling efficiency and capacity in the Federation. The event also coincided with Global Recycling Day, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
In his remarks, Ambassador Tao reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to working closely with St. Kitts and Nevis to advance environmental sustainability, strengthen climate resilience, and promote the development of a circular economy.
During the ceremony, Taiwan donated 32 recycling bins to expand community recycling capacity, as well as 900 eco-friendly T-shirts and 400 reusable shopping bags made from recycled PET bottles collected in St. Kitts and Nevis—demonstrating the tangible outcomes of resource recycling.
Project Manager Ms. Joyce Chang also presented the plastic recycling process, illustrating how waste materials can be transformed into valuable products. Students in attendance shared their experiences from visiting the recycling facility, highlighting the importance of youth engagement in environmental protection.
Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis will continue to work hand in hand to transform waste into resources and build a more sustainable and resilient future.
