Basseterre, Saint Kitts, March 31, 2026 (PMO) - Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew has assured citizens that the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis will take deliberate steps to cushion the impact of rising global fuel prices and protect the cost of living.
Speaking at the Cabinet-wide press conference on March 30, the Prime Minister acknowledged that increases in fuel costs, driven by external global factors, have direct implications for everyday expenses in small island states such as St. Kitts and Nevis. He noted that the Government remains acutely aware of the pressures this places on households and is actively working to mitigate those effects.
“We know that the cost of fuel would affect the cost of living. This government will do all that it can to limit that shock from reaching our people,” Dr. Drew stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the Government has already been taking action to shield citizens from the full impact of these increases, drawing on its experience in managing previous economic shocks. He pointed to the administration’s continued willingness to intervene in order to protect the public.
“We will absorb as much as we can, as we did post covid, as we have been doing to ensure that we protect our people from this shock,” he said.
Dr. Drew further noted that the Government has consistently taken on financial burdens to ease the cost of living, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, when global disruptions significantly affected local economies. These efforts, he indicated, reflect a people-centered approach to governance, where the well-being of citizens remains the top priority.
At the same time, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of long-term solutions, noting that recurring global shocks underscore the need for greater national resilience. He pointed to the Government’s ongoing push toward energy independence as a critical component of the Sustainable Island State Agenda.
“These shocks will continue to affect us unless we get to energy independence and we get to the sustainable island state where we can produce our own energy here,” Dr. Drew explained.
The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis continues to monitor global developments closely and remains committed to implementing practical measures to protect citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, while advancing long-term strategies to strengthen economic and energy security.
