Statement from the National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing

The National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing expresses deep sadness at the tragic loss of life recorded last night in Keys Village.

We extend sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Jermaine “Chubby” Clarke, a talented young entertainer and father whose contribution to the cultural and entertainment landscape of St. Kitts and Nevis will be remembered. His passing is a profound loss to those who knew and loved him, as well as to the wider community.

While this loss is particularly felt given his role within the creative sector, we are reminded that every life lost to violence and gun-related crime is a tragedy. Each incident represents not only the loss of an individual, but the disruption of families, communities, and the social fabric of our nation.

As the Easter holiday weekend continues, the Secretariat urges all citizens and residents to act responsibly, exercise restraint, and prioritise peaceful resolution in all interactions. Moments of conflict can be managed without escalation, and the choices made in those moments carry lasting consequences.

We also take this opportunity to remind the public that the National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing remains available to provide support and access to resources, including counselling referrals and intervention services. Individuals and families in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the Secretariat by calling 869-665-1067. Calls and WhatsApp messages can also be sent to 869-667-7257, or via email at humansecurity@gov.kn.

Persons with information that may assist the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force with ongoing investigations are urged to contact the nearest police station or submit tips anonymously through the Crime Stoppers hotline at 707. All information shared with the Police or the Secretariat will be handled with the utmost confidentiality and discretion.

St. Kitts and Nevis has made significant progress in reclaiming its sense of safety, with notable reductions in homicides and other forms of violence. This progress reflects the combined impact of strong law enforcement efforts and a public health approach to crime and violence prevention, working together to address both immediate threats and their underlying causes. It is the result of a collective national effort, and one that must be protected and strengthened.

This is our home. It requires each of us - as individuals, as neighbours, and as communities - working in partnership with law enforcement and national institutions, including the National Secretariat for Human Security and Wellbeing, to ensure that it remains safe and secure.

Together, we can continue to build and sustain a more peaceful future for ourselves and for the generations to come.
