St. Kitts and Nevis, Guyana Deepen Strategic Ties Through Security, Agriculture, Modernization and Biodiversity Pact

By: PMO, Press Release

Georgetown, Guyana, April 8, 2026 (PMO) - Saint Kitts and Nevis and Guyana have taken a major step toward deepening bilateral relations following the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) in the areas of non-lethal defense and security cooperation, agriculture and food security, and government modernization. The agreements were signed on April 8th, during Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew’s visit to Guyana, where he also formalized Saint Kitts and Nevis’ membership in the Global Biodiversity Alliance, an international initiative launched by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali to safeguard biodiversity and promote sustainable development.

The signing marks a significant advancement in cooperation between the two Caribbean nations, building on a longstanding relationship rooted in shared history, regional solidarity, and people-to-people ties. The new agreements establish practical frameworks for collaboration in critical sectors that are central to the development priorities of both countries and the wider Caribbean Community.

Prime Minister Drew expressed that the agreements reflect a shared commitment to translating vision into meaningful outcomes for citizens. He noted that the areas selected for cooperation were intentional and designed to deliver measurable benefits in both the short and long term. “I’ve selected what I think would have solid impacting St. Kitts and Nevis,” Prime Minister Drew said, while emphasizing the importance of implementing the agreements in a focused and strategic way.

Speaking on agriculture and food security, Prime Minister Drew underscored the importance of strengthening local production and reducing dependence on external markets, particularly amid rising global food prices and supply chain disruptions. He pointed to the tremendous opportunities that exist for Saint Kitts and Nevis to benefit from Guyana’s growing agricultural capacity while also expanding domestic output through knowledge transfer and technical support.

“As you can see, the cost of food across the world… there’s a lot to learn, but there’s also opportunities, because we want to buy food as well. You have it here in Guyana. Why buy it from outside the region?” the Prime Minister stated. He added that the Federation’s tourism sector presents a strong and consistent market for regional agricultural products, while enhanced local production will also help improve national resilience and affordability.

On government modernization, Prime Minister Drew welcomed Guyana’s offer to support Saint Kitts and Nevis in leveraging technology to improve governance, project oversight, and decision-making. He said access to real-time data and modern digital systems can significantly strengthen the effectiveness of public administration and accelerate national development outcomes. The collaboration is expected to support Saint Kitts and Nevis’ broader digital transformation agenda and improve accountability across ministries and departments.

In addition to the three MOUs, Prime Minister Drew also signed Saint Kitts and Nevis onto the Global Biodiversity Alliance, aligning the Federation’s Sustainable Island State Agenda with a broader international movement to protect ecosystems, preserve natural resources, and support scientific innovation.

“This community champions for diversity… biodiversity fits exactly to what our national agenda is. We want to create a sustainable Island. Biodiversity is a fundamental, so for us this is natural.” He further committed to championing the initiative at the regional level, adding that as Chairman of CARICOM, he would work to encourage wider Caribbean participation in the alliance.

H.E. Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Co-operative Republic of Guyana, who was also on hand, welcomed Saint Kitts and Nevis’ strengthened partnership with Guyana and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting regional development through shared resources, innovation, and practical cooperation. He praised Prime Minister Drew’s leadership within CARICOM and emphasized that the agreements signed represent the start of even deeper collaboration in areas that will directly improve the lives of Caribbean people.

The visit and resulting agreements underscore Saint Kitts and Nevis’ proactive approach to regional diplomacy and development. The Federation continues to pursue strategic partnerships that advance national priorities, strengthen resilience, and create lasting opportunities for the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
