BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING a series of recent shooting incidents that have left three people dead, the Police High Command has outlined new measures aimed at curbing the rise in violence.
Over the past two weeks, three young men were killed in separate incidents across the island, sparking widespread concern. The police have described the situation as “a few serious and tragic incidents involving the use of firearms.”
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Commissioner of Police James Sutton acknowledged the growing unease. He noted that “families are grieving, and communities are understandably concerned.”
Sutton revealed that he met early yesterday (Apr. 20) with Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew and other members of the national security apparatus to assess the situation and finalise a coordinated operational plan to address the recent surge in violent crime.
He stressed that this engagement will be ongoing. “We have established a structured daily review process to monitor developments, assess intelligence, and ensure that our response remains targeted, adaptive, and effective until stability is restored,” he said.
The Commissioner also made it clear that the police are not acting alone. He said law enforcement is working closely with the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force, as well as regional and international partners, to ensure a focused, intelligence-led response. Investigations into the recent incidents, he added, are actively ongoing.
Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in key areas, along with targeted operations and continued enforcement efforts aimed at removing illegal firearms and disrupting criminal activity.
At the same time, Sutton underscored the importance of public cooperation. “Public safety is strongest when law enforcement and the community work together. If you see something, say something,” he urged.
He added that even the smallest piece of information could help prevent further violence and bring those responsible to justice.
“Rest assured, we stand and share your concerns and are actively acting decisively. We are here today to tell you what we are doing - addressing your concerns and listening to your suggestions,” Sutton said.
