Independent candidates begin Positioning ahead of possible election call

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AMID growing speculation that general elections could be called this year, potential candidates are beginning to hit the airwaves, roll out their plans and emerge from the political shadows.

This week, reports circulated within media circles that two independent candidates have signaled their intention to contest seats in the next general election.

Henry Marsham and Kurtisse Caines are both reportedly seeking to unseat incumbents who remain popular within their respective constituencies. According to a flyer making the rounds on social media — which has not been independently verified by SKNVibes News — Caines is expected to challenge former Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris in Constituency Seven.

Marsham, meanwhile, is reportedly preparing to contest Constituency Four, currently represented by Agriculture Minister and St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party candidate Samal Duggins.

Speaking on WINN FM’s “Inside the News,” Marsham said his decision to enter politics was driven by what he described as the “cries of the people” at both the constituency and national levels.

He argued that many residents feel abandoned by elected representatives once elections are over.

“And once they get elected, we don't see them, you know, and this is a time that this has to stop,” he stated. “And there is a lot that needs to be done in Constituency Number Four in St. Kitts. And that's one of the reasons why I decided [to run].”

The overseas-based health professional said he believes his leadership experience and professional background make him a suitable candidate to represent the constituency.

“I've decided to, you know, put my hat in the ring, try and win this seat and to work for the people, work for the people of Constituency Number Four, and also the people of St. Kitts and Nevis on a whole. Too much empty promises,” he explained.

Marsham also pointed to the flexibility of running as an independent candidate, saying it allows him to work across political lines.

“Well, I chose to run independently because I want the flexibility to work across the political lines and focus on particular solutions rather than party priorities,” he added.

However, veteran regional political analyst Peter Wickham believes independent candidates face an uphill battle within the Federation’s political landscape.

“I don’t think they will,” Wickham said on WINN FM when asked whether independents could secure victory at the polls.

Over the years, several individuals have expressed interest in running for office as independents, but few have made a significant impact on the established political structure.

Wickham referenced examples from across the region where independent candidates have won seats, but noted that such victories remain rare and are often tied to unique political circumstances.

Marsham, however, appears undeterred, confirming that if elected, he would be willing to return to the Federation to serve.
