CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - PRESIDENT of the Nevis Cricket Association Ronald Powell said they are ready to host the regional four-day cricket match between Barbados and the Combined Colleges slated for January 15-18.
In order to test its readiness for the upcoming event, a match was played last Saturday (Jan. 9) on the center pitch of the Elquemeado Willet Park (formally known as Grove Park), which was proven to be of excellent condition.
Powell said that he was pleased with the carry of deliveries and noted that most times the take was above the shoulders from the fast bowlers, and the bounce and turn from the spin bowlers were also great.
“My commendation goes out to Jabal Tyson and Livingston Jabada Lawrence for their hard work in preparing the pitch,” said Powell.
Powell is calling on the general public to go out and witness what is expected to be a very competitive match. He noted that among the players from Barbados are: Pedro Collins; Tino Best; Dayle Richards; Shamar Brookes, who last year captained the West Indies U-19 team; and the team’s captain Ryan Hinds.
And among Combined Colleges’ team are former West Indies captain Floyd Reifer, Omar Phillip, Kavesh Kantasingh, Kyle Corbin and Chadwick Walton. Both teams are expected to arrive in Nevis tomorrow (Jan. 13).
Following reports of the death of Hayden Walsh, Powell said, “Our deepest condolences are being expressed to the family, the Antiguan cricket public and the Leewards from the Nevis Cricket Association on the passing of a former cricketer and administrator…Mr. Hayden Walsh.
He also, on behalf of the Nevis Cricket Association, extended best wishes to Nelson Boland, the young Nevisian cricketer who has successfully made the West Indies U-19 team.
