Group denied entry over Ebola concerns

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER confusion erupted at the airport earlier today following the denial of entry to a group of Africans into the Federation, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has responded, stating that the decision was made for public health and safety reasons.

In a statement issued this evening, the government confirmed that entry was denied to seventeen Nigerian nationals who arrived on regional airline flights.

According to the statement, the “decision was not taken lightly” and was made on the advice of competent health authorities as part of the country’s responsibility to protect public health amid heightened global concerns surrounding Ebola.

The government referenced recent comments from Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who confirmed that more than 101 deaths have been linked to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with over 900 suspected cases and more than 200 suspected deaths.

Authorities also pointed to an advisory from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, which stated that “Nigeria is at high risk of Ebola importation” due to ongoing transmission in parts of Africa and the movement of people through major transport hubs.

While noting that Nigeria has not recorded any confirmed cases connected to the current outbreak, the government said the advisory underscores the need for heightened caution and preparedness.

“Saint Kitts and Nevis has always valued its warm and respectful relationship with the people of Nigeria,” the statement read. “We remain a welcoming nation, and we deeply regret any inconvenience or distress caused to our Nigerian brothers and sisters affected by this necessary public health measure.”

The government added that its foremost responsibility is to act with caution and in accordance with public health guidance, while continuing to treat all individuals with dignity and respect.

Officials also urged the public to comply fully with the laws of St. Kitts and Nevis to ensure the smooth implementation of the public health policy.
