BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLICE have launched an extensive search operation in the Mt. Liamuiga mountain range for a 33-year-old Chinese national who was reported missing while hiking.
According to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), the search is being carried out in collaboration with the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the Fire and Rescue Department, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The missing individual has been identified as Wang Zyuan, a Chinese national born on August 29th, 1992. Police said Wang was last seen on the hiking trail at approximately 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026.
He was said to be hiking alone and without a guide at the time of his disappearance, and was reportedly dressed in black clothing and red shoes.
At approximately 2:00 p.m. on May 27th, Wang contacted emergency services via 911 to report that he was lost in the Mt. Liamuiga mountains. However, contact with him was later lost.
A joint search and rescue team was immediately mobilised and continued operations throughout the evening of May 27th. The police force noted that search resumed yesterday morning (May 28th), with teams combing the hillside up to the crater area, but Wang has not yet been located.
Officials said the search was suspended for the evening and is expected to resume on May 29th, 2026. Cell tower data obtained from the relevant network provider is expected to assist search teams in directing operations.
Meanwhile, authorities are also calling for volunteers to assist with the ongoing search efforts.
Over the years, several individuals have been reported missing after venturing into the mountain range, only to later be rescued by emergency personnel.
