BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) on Saturday released details surrounding a shooting incident that left one man injured and led to the apprehension of a suspect by members of the public.
In a media statement, police said they are investigating the shooting, which occurred at Baker's Corner between 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2026.
The victim, a 21-year-old resident of Wellington Road, sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. Police said he was transported by ambulance to the Joseph N. France General Hospital, where he received medical treatment - where he remains warded in stable condition.
Following the shooting, members of the public reportedly apprehended a suspect and detained him until police arrived at the scene. Reports indicate that the individual was also assaulted by bystanders during the confrontation.
Police confirmed that a suspect was subsequently taken into custody in connection with the incident. Officers also seized a firearm believed to have been used in the commission of the offence.
The RSCNPF commended the actions of those who assisted in the suspect's apprehension, stating: “the courage demonstrated by members of the public who intervened during this incident and whose actions contributed to the apprehension of the suspect. The Force is deeply grateful for the community's commitment to safety and willingness to act in defence of a neighbour.”
However, the police also cautioned against confronting armed suspects, noting that such actions carry significant personal risk.
“Where possible, the Force strongly encourages the public to prioritise their own safety and remove themselves from the immediate area,” the statement added.
