UN warns of global consequences as Middle East conflict escalates again

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St Kitts – AS St. Kitts and Nevis, along with the rest of the world, continues to feel the effects of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, there are few signs that the fighting will end anytime soon. The situation has intensified following renewed United States strikes on targets in Iran and fresh Iranian attacks on neighbouring territories.

With the ceasefire appearing to have collapsed and no agreement reached to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, global food and oil prices continue to rise. The resulting increase in inflation and slowing economic growth have sparked concerns worldwide, particularly among developing nations that rely heavily on imports.

Those concerns deepened after inflation in the United States climbed to 4.2 percent in May, reigniting discussions about the vulnerability of Caribbean economies that depend significantly on U.S. goods and services.

Amid the renewed hostilities, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the escalating situation.

In a statement delivered through his spokesperson, Guterres cited “the strikes by the United States on Iran and the strikes by Iran on neighbouring countries in the Gulf and beyond that are not parties to the conflict, as well as the significant increase in hostile rhetoric.”

He urged all parties to return to full implementation of the ceasefire and avoid any further deterioration of the situation.

Addressing the United Nations Security Council, the Secretary-General warned that the latest developments could lead to a full resumption of the conflict, with “unpredictable consequences for the region and the world, especially the most vulnerable countries.”

Guterres also stressed that navigational rights and freedoms, in accordance with international law, must be respected. He called on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and to take every feasible precaution to protect civilians.

Overnight, Iran launched missiles toward several U.S. military installations across the region, including in Kuwait. Reports indicated that many of the missiles were intercepted. The attacks reportedly came after the United States accused Iran of downing one of its helicopters.

Despite the escalation, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he had cancelled planned military strikes against Iran.

“Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Meanwhile, the Secretary-General reiterated that genuine dialogue and diplomacy remain the only path toward a lasting resolution.

He called on both the United States and Iran to redouble their efforts to reach a peaceful, comprehensive and durable agreement that advances regional and international peace and security.
