Rebuild. Refocus. Rise: How One Caribbean Entrepreneur Turned Adversity Into a New Beginning

June 16th, 2026 -- June is recognized as Rebuild Your Life Month, a time to reflect on where we are, what we've overcome, and how we can move forward with greater purpose. It is also the time of year when many people pause to look back at the goals they set in January, evaluate their progress, and consider what is possible for the balance of the year ahead.

For many people, rebuilding doesn't happen because they choose it. It happens because life leaves them no other option.

For Trinidad and Tobago entrepreneur and mother Naquiyah Muhammad, rebuilding became more than a choice…..it became a necessity.

Today, Naquiyah is the founder of NMK Designs and Printing, a growing branding and print solutions company helping businesses across the Caribbean strengthen their visibility and present themselves professionally with confidence. But behind the business is a journey marked by resilience, perseverance, and the courage to begin again.

Several years ago, after investing significant time, resources, and energy into building her business, Naquiyah experienced a devastating setback. A robbery resulted in the loss of critical equipment and income, disrupting not only her business operations but the stability she had worked hard to create.

At the same time, she was raising her young child and navigating the everyday realities of entrepreneurship.

For many people, such a loss could have been enough to walk away.

    Instead, Naquiyah chose to rebuild.

"I had a choice," she recalls. "I could allow the situation to define me, or I could use it as motivation to create something stronger. It wasn't easy, but I knew giving up wasn't an option."

What followed was a period of reflection, growth, and determination. Rather than focusing solely on what she had lost, she began focusing on what she could still create.

    That mindset changed everything.

Today, her business is thriving, but perhaps more importantly, her experience has given her a deeper sense of purpose. Through her work, she now helps entrepreneurs strengthen their brands, build confidence, and understand the importance of visibility in business growth.

Her journey carries valuable lessons for women across the Caribbean who may be rebuilding their own lives, careers, businesses, or dreams.

    1. Start Where You Are

Many women postpone their goals while waiting for the perfect time, more money, or the right opportunity. Naquiyah's journey is proof that progress begins with the resources and circumstances you have today—not the ones you hope to have tomorrow.

"You don't need to have everything figured out," she says. "You just need to take the next step."

    2. Don't Let One Setback Define Your Story

Challenges are inevitable, but they do not have to determine your future. Whether it's a business setback, personal loss, or unexpected obstacle, one difficult chapter does not mean the story is over.

"What happened to me became part of my story, but it did not become my identity."

    3. Invest in Yourself

One of the greatest investments a woman can make is in her own growth. Whether through education, mentorship, networking, or personal development, building yourself is never wasted effort.

"Your confidence grows when you continue learning and improving. You are your greatest asset."

    4. Ask for Support

Many Caribbean women carry tremendous responsibilities and often feel they must do everything alone. Naquiyah believes one of the greatest strengths a woman can possess is knowing when to seek help.

"There is power in community. There is power in surrounding yourself with people who believe in you."

    5. Keep Going

Success is rarely about one big breakthrough. More often, it is the result of small, consistent actions taken over time.

"Even when progress feels slow, keep moving. Every step forward counts."

As many people pause during this mid-year season to reassess their goals and direction, Naquiyah's story serves as a powerful reminder that rebuilding is not about returning to who you were before—it's about becoming who you are meant to be.

"Sometimes life forces you to start over," she says. "But starting over doesn't mean starting from nothing. You start again with experience, wisdom, and a stronger sense of who you are."

For Caribbean women navigating challenges of their own, that message may be exactly the reminder they need.

Because sometimes the most beautiful chapters begin after the chapter you thought would break you
