BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has pledged its support to Venezuela as the South American nation grapples with the aftermath of two powerful earthquakes that have claimed more than 150 lives and left widespread devastation, according to the New York Times.

Venezuela was struck by earthquakes measuring 7.1 and 7.5 on the Richter Scale, causing extensive damage across several states, including the capital, Caracas.

Initial reports indicate that more than 150 people have been confirmed dead, while hundreds more have been injured. Rescue teams continue to search through collapsed buildings for survivors, with many people still reported missing or trapped beneath the rubble. Authorities have warned that the death toll is expected to rise as search-and-rescue operations continue.

The earthquakes also caused significant damage to critical infrastructure, disrupting electricity, communications, transportation and other essential public services in several affected communities.

In response to the disaster, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew said St. Kitts and Nevis stands ready to assist Venezuela in whatever way is needed.

Speaking during his Roundtable programme on Thursday (June 25), Dr. Drew revealed that he has both spoken and written to Venezuelan officials to express the Federation's condolences and offer support during the national tragedy.

"I have spoken to our Ambassador to Venezuela, H.E. Dr. Norgen Wilson, who has been in touch with Venezuela and is expected to travel there very, very soon. I think within the next week or so," Dr. Drew said.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has mobilised humanitarian assistance to support the Venezuelan Government's emergency response. The UN Humanitarian Country Team is working closely with national authorities and partner agencies, while the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is facilitating the deployment of urban search-and-rescue teams.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said he was deeply saddened by the loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the earthquakes.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General extended his sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

He also expressed the United Nations' solidarity with the Government and people of Venezuela as recovery efforts continue
