Sandy Point Benevolent Society (SPBS) mourns the passing of Founder and President, Dr. Stewart Orlyn Williams

By: SPBS, Press Release

SPBS, July 2nd, 2026 -- The Sandy Point Benevolent Society (SPBS) announces with profound sadness the passing of its Founder and President, Dr. Stewart O. Williams, who transitioned peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2026, following a courageous battle with glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.

Dr. Williams, a proud 1976 graduate of Sandy Point High School and a distinguished chemist by profession, was the visionary leader behind the establishment of SPBS. What began as an initiative among seven friends to recognize academic excellence through the Principal’s Award blossomed under his guidance into the Sandy Point Benevolent Society, a respected nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals through education and community service.

For nearly two decades, Dr. Williams served with unwavering dedication, integrity, and compassion. He held the office of President from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2015 to 2026, making him the organization’s longest-serving president. His leadership touched countless lives through scholarships, mentorship programs, educational initiatives, and charitable outreach that helped many young men and women realize their dreams of becoming doctors, accountants, educators, ministers, and other professionals.

Beyond his accomplishments, Dr. Williams was a devoted family man, a trusted friend, and an exceptional community leader whose kindness, wisdom, and generosity inspired all who knew him. His belief in giving back and lifting others up became the guiding principle of SPBS and remains firmly embedded in the organization’s mission: “We give back so others can move forward”.

Dr. Williams leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Vernice Williams; his daughters, Sherise, Lauren, and Allison; his cherished grandchildren; his brother, Lorenza Williams (Larry); and a host of extended family members, friends, colleagues, and admirers whose lives he profoundly impacted.

The Executive and Membership of SPBS extend heartfelt condolences to the Williams family during this difficult time. We pray that God grants them comfort, strength, and peace.

Though we mourn the loss of our beloved Founder and President, we also celebrate a life of extraordinary service and purpose. Dr. Stewart O. Williams leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.

In his memory, the Sandy Point Benevolent Society pledges to continue the work he so passionately championed, empowering others through education, mentorship, and service.

Rest well, Dr. Stewart O. Williams. Your work on earth is complete, but your legacy lives on forever.
