Fay-Ann Lyons sends early warning to Soca Monarch contenders

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE three-time Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Road March champion, Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez, has sent out an early warning to the Soca Monarch contenders.

Alvarez created history by being the first female to win the International Power Soca Monarch in 2009 and the first individual to win the Groovy Soca Monarch and People’s Choice awards in row, accomplishing this while being pregnant.

According to the Trinidad Xpress Online, on Saturday, Jan. 10 Alvarez declared that the other artistes need to come good this time around and she is no longer pregnant.

“Last year, I took the Soca Monarch and the Road March when I was pregnant, but this year I ain’t pregnant again! So it’s not going to be easy to beat me. Ah going up in the bush, up Chancellor Hill exercising and training; so tell Iwer George, tell Bunji Garlin, tell Breathless Blaxx... tell de whole clip, I say to come good,” the newsite stated.

Alvarez was reported to have put the crowd through the motions of a typical soca-aerobic workout sampling her new material in between her beloved hits. As she issued her stern warning, her husband, famed 'Ragga Soca' lyricist Bunji Garlin, observed from backstage.

Alvarez’s dominance of the 2009 Carnival season in Trinidad and Tobago has been compared to David Rudder’s swept of the Carnival Road March, Trinidad Calypso Monarch and Young King competitions in 1986.

She now stands as the only female artiste to win the Carnival Road March three times and the second to attain back-to-back wins in two consecutive years.

She won the Goovy category with ‘Heavy T Bumper’ and captured the soca category with ‘Meet SuperBlue’. Who can forget Alvarez’s outstanding performance during her song “Meet SuperBlue” that had the crowd going crazy?

One of the many highlights of that performance was while midway through it, she told the crowd that when her father, Austin Lyons, better known as ‘SuperBlue’, was in his prime he only had to step on the stage for mayhem to occur and that she wanted the same treatment.

She told them that she is going to leave the stage and return to them “getting on bad” for her.

However, instead of Alvarez returning to the stage, the man himself, Superblue, appeared doing his trademark dance. Another highlight of her performance came when the nine-month pregnant Alvarez announced that she was feeling a pain and the baby was acting up.

She then put the microphone to her stomach and the digitally created voice of a baby was heard chanting that she and her mommy to put a lyrical beating on Bunji, which sent the crowd wild.

Following her performances the crowd was chanting her name and for about three minutes the MC could not quiet them.
