ATLANTA, Georgia — ATLANTA's summer events calendar is about to welcome a vibrant new addition as the inaugural Rum Island Festival prepares to transform Piedmont Park into a celebration of Caribbean music, culture, cuisine and community.
Taking place on Saturday, July 11, the festival is positioning itself as more than just another music event. Built around the theme "Culture. Community. Rum.", Rum Island Festival is designed as an immersive Caribbean experience, blending live entertainment, premium rum tastings, Afro-Caribbean cuisine, fashion, art and cultural storytelling in a single destination.
Created in Atlanta with ambitions of expanding into major U.S. cities and Caribbean destinations, the festival aims to celebrate the global influence of Caribbean culture while creating a platform for artists, entrepreneurs and cultural ambassadors.
Adding to the excitement is the announcement that Trinidad and Tobago Soca legend Denise Belfon has joined the inaugural lineup, bringing decades of Carnival energy to the stage.
Known around the world as "Saucy Wow," Belfon has spent more than 35 years helping define the sound of Soca music. Her breakthrough anthem, Work (Put Yuh Back In It), originally released in 1998, has become one of the genre's most recognizable songs, remixed countless times and embraced by DJs and Carnival lovers across the globe.
The classic has recently enjoyed renewed international attention after being sampled by Drake on the track BBW from his surprise album Maid of Honour, introducing Belfon's signature sound to a new generation of listeners and reaffirming her lasting influence on contemporary music.
Beyond her iconic hit, Belfon's catalogue includes Carnival favourites such as KaKa Lay Lay, Hard Wuk, Wining Queen, Boss Lady, Indian Man, Chuku Chuku and Wanti. Throughout her career, she has performed across the Caribbean, North America, Europe, Africa and Asia, proudly representing Trinidad and Tobago as one of Soca's most enduring cultural ambassadors.
The festival's entertainment lineup will also feature Jamaican Dancehall star Aidonia, Billboard-recognized rising artiste Ayetian, and an all-star cast of DJs including Ricky Platinum, Yung Rage, Unique Soundz, Propa English, Boogy Ranks, DJ Fabb and others.
Keeping the energy high throughout the day will be media personality, comedian and entrepreneur Pretty Vee, who has been announced as the festival's official host.
"Listen, Atlanta is not ready! Rum Island Festival is about to bring some of the biggest Caribbean vibes the city has ever seen," Pretty Vee said. "The culture, the music, the rum, the food, the fashion and everything in between. I'm so excited to be the official host of this incredible celebration. As someone with Caribbean roots and so much love for Atlanta, this one is personal. July 11, we're outside!"
The announcement comes as Caribbean culture continues to enjoy unprecedented global visibility. From Dancehall and Soca influencing mainstream music to Caribbean fashion, language and lifestyle dominating social media and popular culture, the festival arrives at a time when the region's creative impact is being felt around the world.
Festival organisers say attendees can expect eight hours of live performances spanning Dancehall, Soca, Afrobeats and Reggaeton, alongside premium rum tastings, curated cocktail experiences, immersive lounges and a Caribbean food village showcasing authentic Afro-Caribbean cuisine.
While entertainment is at the heart of the event, community remains a central focus. Rum Island Festival has partnered with Her Village Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation that supports families experiencing poverty. A portion of festival proceeds, together with on-site donation initiatives, will help fund the organisation's community programmes.
With its inaugural edition launching in Atlanta, organisers envision Rum Island Festival becoming a travelling cultural platform that celebrates Caribbean excellence in cities across the United States and beyond.
For one summer weekend, however, the spotlight belongs to Atlanta, where the sights, sounds and flavours of the Caribbean are set to take centre stage.
