BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, 22 July 2026 - The Rotaract Club of St. Kitts has signalled the beginning of a new chapter in its history by opening the 2026-27 Rotary year with a beach clean-up on Saturday, 18 July 2026 at Cockleshell Bay.
This initiative saw members and volunteers working along the shoreline to remove discarded waste from the beach and surrounding areas. At the end of the activity, seventeen (17) bags of trash containing plastics, paper and other non-degradable items had been collected. The beach clean-up also highlighted the ongoing challenge of pollution in coastal spaces and the important role that individuals and communities can play in protecting St. Kitts' natural environment.
For the Rotaract Club of St. Kitts, the activity forms part of its commitment to meaningful, grassroots community service and reflects a deliberate commitment to the environment, one of Rotary's Areas of Focus. Through practical initiatives such as beach clean-ups, the Club aims to encourage greater environmental awareness and to inspire people to think more carefully about how their everyday actions affect the spaces they inhabit.
“When we look at the amount and type of waste collected, we are reminded that caring for the environment cannot be left to the government alone. Everyone has a responsibility to dispose of their waste properly while committing to care for our beaches and coastal spaces.”
The Club is encouraging residents and visitors to pay closer attention to preserving the cleanliness of beaches and to duly consider the impact of littering and improper waste disposal on the environment, wildlife and the wider community.
“Our beaches, coastlines and marine resources are among the greatest assets we own as a people, and protecting them requires more than a single clean-up. It requires a mindset shift in how we think about who owns and is responsible for protecting the environment.
We therefore encourage persons to become more conscious about how their individual actions may impact the health of our environment and by extension, our economy. ”
The Rotaract Club of St. Kitts will continue its environmental efforts through quarterly beach clean-ups for the 2026–27 Rotary year. Consequently, the Club welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other community groups, schools, non-governmental organisations and members of the private sector to expand the reach and impact of its environmental programming.
