BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots suffered a disappointing start to the 2026 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season, slumping to a 19-run defeat (DLS method) against defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders in a rain-affected opener in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The Patriots' batting lineup never found its rhythm after being sent in to bat, posting a modest 109 for 9 from their 20 overs. Veteran spinner Sunil Narine was the chief destroyer, returning outstanding figures of 3 for 7 as he dismantled the Patriots' top order.
Narine struck with the very first ball of Kyle Mayers' innings and went on to remove three of the Patriots' top four batsmen, leaving the side reeling at 16 for 3.
With early wickets tumbling, Kevin Wickham attempted to rebuild the innings with a patient 38, but regular breakthroughs from Terrance Hinds prevented the Patriots from establishing any meaningful partnerships. Their total ultimately proved below par despite the late resistance.
Chasing a revised target, Trinbago's overseas pair of Alex Hales and Colin Munro began cautiously. Hales managed just 9 from 11 balls before falling to Jason Holder, while Munro departed soon after for 17, also inside the PowerPlay.
Those early setbacks, however, failed to derail the defending champions. South African Matthew Breetzke anchored the innings with an unbeaten 35 from 35 deliveries, sharing a steady partnership with Joshua da Silva.
Da Silva, who appeared to be in discomfort throughout his innings, retired hurt on 18 from 22 balls after struggling with an apparent injury. His retirement did little to halt Trinbago's progress, as Breetzke calmly guided his side toward victory.
Rain interrupted play for a second time with the Knight Riders on 94 for 2 after 15 overs. Under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, they were comfortably ahead of the required par score of 75, handing them a 19-run victory and an ideal start to their title defence.
The tournament continues with the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons taking on the St. Lucia Kings at 7:00 p.m.
