Making Mathematics Results More Meaningful: Understanding CXC’s New CTEC Module Grades 

    The release of the 2026 CSEC results introduced a new feature that has generated considerable discussion among students, parents and teachers: the appearance of a CTEC module grade alongside the traditional CSEC Mathematics grade. 

     

    Many candidates who received an overall Grade I in CSEC Mathematics also noticed a module grade such as A or B and understandably asked: How can I receive a Grade I overall but a Grade B for a module? 

     

    The answer lies in understanding the different purposes of the overall CSEC grade, the profile grades, and the new CTEC module grades. 

     

    The CSEC Mathematics Grade Remains the Final Grade 
    First and most importantly, the overall CSEC Mathematics grade remains the candidate's official subject grade. 

     

    If a student receives a Grade I in CSEC Mathematics, that Grade I remains the final qualification awarded for the subject. 

     

    The CTEC module grade does not replace, reduce or alter that result. 

     

    Instead, it provides additional information about how the candidate performed in a specific area of the Mathematics syllabus. 

     

    How Mathematics Results Have Traditionally Been Reported 

     

    For many years, CSEC Mathematics results have included profile grades that measure performance in three cognitive dimensions

     

    • Knowledge 
    • Comprehension 
    • Reasoning 

     

    These profile scores provide valuable information about how candidates think, process information and apply mathematical concepts. 

     

    However, while useful, profile grades do not always tell parents, teachers or employers exactly which areas of Mathematics a student has mastered. 

     

    For example, a strong performance in the Knowledge profile does not necessarily reveal whether the student excelled in Algebra, Statistics, Measurement or Trigonometry. 

     

    This is where the new modular approach offers a significant advantage. 

     

    Introducing the CTEC Approach 
    The Caribbean Targeted Education Certificate (CTEC) is a new modular and stackable credential developed by CXC. 

     

    CTEC allows achievement to be recognised in specific modules of a subject while maintaining the same academic standards and syllabus used for the full qualification. CTEC is a micro-credential framework designed to recognise competencies and provide more flexible pathways to certification. CXC is also working with stakeholders across the Caribbean so that CTEC credentials can be understood and recognised by employers as evidence of workforce-relevant knowledge and skills. 

     

    The modular approach provides employers with clearer information about the competencies possessed by applicants. 

     

    The Three Mathematics Modules 
    Under the modular framework, the CSEC Mathematics syllabus is organised into three modules. 

     

    Module 1: Fundamentals of Secondary Level Mathematics 

     

    This module focuses on foundational mathematical concepts and skills, including

     

    a. Number Theory and Computation 
    b. Consumer Arithmetic 
    c. Sets 
    d. Measurement 
    e. Algebra 1 
    f. Introduction to Graphs 

     

    This module represents the fundamental building blocks of Mathematics upon which later concepts depend. 

     

    Module 2: Intermediate Secondary Level Mathematics 

     

    Module 2 develops more advanced concepts and applications, including

     

    a. Statistics 1 
    b. Algebra 2 
    c. Relations, Functions and Graphs 1 
    d. Geometry and Trigonometry 1 
    e. Vectors and Matrices 1 

     

    Module 3: Higher Concepts in Secondary Level Mathematics 

     

    The third module assesses higher-order mathematical concepts and applications, including

     

    a. Statistics 2 
    b. Relations, Functions and Graphs 2 
    c. Geometry and Trigonometry 2 
    d. Vectors and Matrices 2 

     

    Together, these three modules cover the complete Mathematics syllabus and provide a clearer picture of where students demonstrate competence and mastery. 

     

    What Does a Module Grade Mean? 

     

    Suppose a candidate receives
     

     

    Qualification Grade
    CSEC Mathematics Grade I
    Module 1 (Fundamentals) Grade B

    This does not mean the student performed poorly. 

     

    Rather, it means
    • The candidate achieved a Grade I across the full Mathematics qualification
    • Within Module 1, the candidate demonstrated good or proficient mastery of the content and skills assessed in that module. 

     

    A Grade A would indicate an excellent level of mastery, while a Grade B indicates strong proficiency but not the highest level of attainment. 

     

    The two grades therefore communicate different information. 

     

    The CSEC grade answers the question: 
    How well did the student perform across the entire Mathematics syllabus

     

    The Module Grade answers the question: 
    How well did the student perform within this specific body of mathematical content and competencies? 

     

    Why This Matters 
    The modular approach makes Mathematics results easier to interpret and is more useful. 

     

    For the first time, stakeholders can look beyond a single overall grade and gain insight into specific areas of strength and achievement. 

     

    For Students 
    Students can better understand the areas in which they have demonstrated competence and those in which they may wish to improve. 

     

    For Parents 
    Parents receive clearer information about their child's achievement and can better understand the nature of the student's strengths. 

     

    For Teachers 
    Teachers gain more precise data that can help inform instructional planning and targeted interventions. 

     

    For Schools and Ministries 
    Education systems can analyse performance trends more effectively and identify areas where additional curriculum support may be needed. 

     

    For Employers 
    Perhaps most significantly, modular grades can provide employers with greater insight into a candidate's competencies. The CTEC framework was designed with workforce readiness in mind, and that module credentials can help employers understand the specific skills and knowledge demonstrated by job applicants.  

     

    For Universities and Other Tertiary Education Institutions 
    Modular results give tertiary education institutions clearer evidence of the competencies applicants have mastered, beyond the overall subject grade.  For example, a university offering programmes in Engineering, Data Science, Economics, Computer Science or Actuarial Science may find value in understanding a student's performance in modules containing Algebra, Functions, Statistics, Trigonometry, Vectors and Matrices. Similarly, institutions preparing students for teacher education, business studies or technical and vocational disciplines may benefit from a clearer understanding of the competencies that students have already mastered. 

     

    For the first time, tertiary education institutions could examine not only what grade a student earned in Mathematics, but also which mathematical concepts and competencies that student has demonstrably mastered. This has the potential to enrich admission, placement and programme selection decisions in ways that were not previously possible. 

     

    A More Meaningful Way to Report Achievement 
    The introduction of CTEC does not diminish the value of the traditional CSEC qualifications. Rather, it enhances the information available to stakeholders. 

     

    The overall CSEC Mathematics grade continues to certify achievement across the entire subject. The profile grades continue to describe performance in Knowledge, Comprehension and Reasoning. 

     

    The new module grades add a third dimension, identifying achievement in specific content areas and competencies. 

     

    Together, these measures provide a richer and more meaningful picture of learner achievement. 

     

    As CXC continues the rollout of its modularisation initiative, students, parents, teachers, tertiary institutions and employers can expect results that are increasingly transparent, interpretable and aligned with the skills and competencies required for success in education, work and lifelong learning.
