BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew is being transported overseas for specialised medical observation after falling ill on Sunday evening.
The Federal Cabinet confirmed Monday that the Prime Minister was treated at the Joseph N. France (JNF) General Hospital after experiencing what it described as “mild discomfort,” along with nausea and a headache.
According to a statement issued by Cabinet, Drew presented to the hospital on the evening of Sunday, August 30, and was immediately admitted for observation and a thorough clinical evaluation.
The medical team and specialists at JNF General Hospital attended to the Prime Minister continuously for approximately 18 hours.
Following comprehensive examinations and diagnostic reviews, his treating physicians said they were satisfied with his overall condition.
The Cabinet said Drew remains “awake, alert, and in stable condition.”
However, out of an abundance of caution and based on the observations made since his admission, the medical team has advised that the Prime Minister be transported overseas for specialised observation and precautionary monitoring.
Arrangements were underway Monday to facilitate the transfer.
The development comes amid messages circulating on social media and other platforms during the morning suggesting that the Prime Minister had suffered a “mild stroke.”
The Government also sought to reassure the public that the business of government continues “seamlessly and without interruption.”
A further update on the Prime Minister’s condition is expected to be issued to the nation at 7:00 p.m. Monday.
