BASSETERRE, St Kitts — WITH Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew seeking medical treatment overseas for an undisclosed ailment, the Cabinet Secretariat has announced changes to several ministerial portfolios to ensure the continued functioning of Government.
In its latest update, the Secretariat said arrangements are in place to ensure the “continued, seamless functioning” of the Government during the Prime Minister’s absence.
Dr Drew reportedly fell ill and sought treatment and observation for approximately 18 hours before his doctors recommended he travel overseas for specialised care and further observation.
The Cabinet Secretariat said the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution and on the advice of his treating physicians.”
The Prime Minister remains in stable condition, according to the Government.
“He remains in stable condition, and the Government is heartened by the continued messages of support and prayer from citizens, residents, and regional and international partners,” the Secretariat said.
At the request of the Prime Minister, several portfolios have been temporarily reassigned to maintain continuity of Government, uphold the constitutional order of succession and ensure the uninterrupted conduct of the nation’s affairs.
Deputy Prime Minister Geoffrey Hanley will serve as Acting Prime Minister during Dr Drew’s absence.
In that capacity, Hanley will also assume responsibility for the Ministries of Finance, Health, and Human Resource Management and Social Security, in addition to his existing ministerial responsibilities.
Attorney-General Garth Wilkin will assume responsibility for National Security, Citizenship and Immigration.
The Cabinet Secretariat said the temporary changes are intended to prevent any disruption to the operations of Government.
“These measures are designed to ensure that every arm of Government continues to function without disruption, and that the essential services on which the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis rely remain fully operational,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, messages of support and concern continue to come from across the political divide and the wider Caribbean region as news of the Prime Minister’s medical absence spreads.
The Government has not disclosed the nature of Dr Drew’s ailment.
The Federal Cabinet said it remains united in its support for the Prime Minister and his family during this period and expressed hope for his full and speedy recovery.
