UNEP’s silence soon to be broken

Dr. Henry Browne

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – QUESTIONS about whether or not the United National Empowerment Party will contest the upcoming general elections remain unanswered with the leader of the party promising he would likely address the issue in the not-too-distant future.

The UNEP was formed in 2004 with prominent lawyer Dr. Henry Browne at its helm. It contested the 2004 general elections and was unsuccessful at capturing any of the eight available seats in St. Kitts, but, from time to time since then, has spoken out on issues which it deemed to be of national importance.

About one week ago, rumours began circulating that the UNEP would be “boycotting” the 2010 general elections. The party’s Public Relation’s Officer (PRO), Walford Arthurton, confirmed that he made this announcement on WINNFM’s Voices programme on Monday, January 4, 2010. He however declined to expound on it, noting his instructions are that a statement from the party would be forthcoming.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Dr. Browne said he is aware of the “rumour” and would be making a statement concerning the issue before Nomination Day slated for January 15.

“I heard the rumour too. I will make a statement before Nomination Day and or take an action on Nomination Day. I will not make any statement now.”

Although tight-lipped about the action he would possibly take, Dr. Browne explained that “it has nothing to do with UNEP…it has to do with me…”

With Nomination Day less than 24 hours away, leader of the UNEP is expected to make his pronouncement sometime today. The likely action, however, according to Browne, would not take place until the day of nomination arrives.
