By: PAM, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts — September 2, 2026: Dr. the Hon. Shawn Richards, MP, has been elected the new Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM).

Dr. Richards was elected at a Special Caucus convened at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. He received 72 votes, while Lincoln David-Pelle secured 9 votes. Two ballots were spoiled, for a total of 83 votes cast.

In brief remarks to delegates following his election, Dr. Richards called on party members to come together and renew their commitment to the People’s Action Movement.

He acknowledged that the party is at a critical juncture in its history but emphasized that this period also presents an opportunity for renewal.

“The People’s Action Movement is ready for renewed energy, bold and innovative ideas, and a relentless commitment to delivering something extraordinary for St. Kitts and Nevis. We must build on our proud legacy while embracing new possibilities, inspiring a new generation and positioning the Movement to lead with purpose, vision and conviction.”

Dr. Richards becomes the sixth Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement. His nomination was made by Deputy Political Leader Azard Gumbs and seconded by Acting Chairperson Mrs. Carlene Henry-Morton.

His election follows the resignation of immediate past Political Leader Natasha Grey-Brookes whom Dr Richards thanked for her service to the party in several capacities including Political Leader and candidate.

The Special Caucus also filled two executive positions that remained vacant following the party’s regular caucus in July. Shermel Drew was elected Assistant General Secretary with 66 votes, defeating Joevarny Flemming, who received 17 votes. Laverne Caines was returned unopposed as Public Relations Officer.

With Tuesday’s appointments, the party has now completed its slate of executive officers which will be ratified on Sunday 27th September, 2026 at its 60th National Convention

The People’s Action Movement extends congratulations to Dr. Richards and the newly elected officers and looks forward to the continued strengthening and advancement of the Movement.
