BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — THE Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has confirmed that Dr. Vance Gilbert has been sentenced to 12 years and six months at His Majesty’s Prison in Basseterre for rape and indecent assault.
According to a police statement, Gilbert was convicted on two counts arising from incidents that occurred between March 1 and March 31, 2020.
The sentence was handed down on September 9, 2026, by High Court Judge His Lordship Justice Patrick Thompson Jr., following Gilbert’s conviction earlier this year.
Gilbert was found guilty on May 27, 2026, after a trial held between May 7 and May 12.
For the offence of rape, he was sentenced to 12 years and six months’ imprisonment, while he received a five-year sentence for indecent assault.
The two sentences are to run concurrently, meaning Gilbert will serve an effective custodial sentence of 12 years and six months at His Majesty’s Prison.
The court also ordered Gilbert to pay EC$9,000 in compensation to the virtual complainant.
The compensation is to be paid in two equal instalments of EC$4,500. The first payment is due by December 31, 2026, and the second by December 31, 2027.
The court further ordered that failure to pay either instalment will result in an additional six months’ imprisonment, to run consecutively with the existing sentence.
