Back to Business: Before Q4, Ask Yourself What You Want to Be Known For

September has a way of changing the energy in business. The slower pace of summer disappears, calendars begin filling up again, and suddenly the conversation shifts to Q4 targets, year-end campaigns, and the inevitable push to finish strong, but as Caribbean businesses get “back to business,” there is another question worth asking:

Are you simply getting busier, or are you becoming better positioned?

Carla Williams Johnson, Managing Director of Trinidad and Tobago-based Carli Communications, has spent more than two decades working across public relations, media, marketing and strategic communications. As a publicist and reputation strategist, she has seen businesses enter the final quarter focused almost entirely on sales and marketing, while overlooking an equally important asset: their reputation.

“Marketing can help you sell what you do. Strategic PR helps people understand why they should trust you, remember you, and choose you,” Williams Johnson says.

As Caribbean businesses prepare for Q4, she recommends four areas of focus.

    1. Audit your reputation, not just your revenue. Google your business. Review your website, social platforms, media coverage, and customer feedback. If someone discovered your company today, what impression would they form? More importantly, is it the impression you intended? A business cannot strategically manage a reputation it isn't paying attention to.

    2. Decide what you want to be known for. Visibility alone isn't enough. Customers, potential partners, and industry peers should be able to associate your business with something specific. Identify the expertise, value, or problem you want your brand to own, then ensure your communications consistently reinforce that positioning.

    3. Look for stories, not just promotions. Q4 does not have to become three months of “Buy this! Book now! Sale ends Friday!” Milestones, customer impact, industry insights, community involvement, expertise, and even lessons learned can become compelling PR opportunities. The goal is not simply to promote more, but to give people more reasons to understand and trust the business behind the promotion.

    4. Start building next year's visibility now. January is too late to begin thinking about January. Awards, speaking opportunities, partnerships, media pitches, and major campaigns often require months of preparation. Q4 is the time to identify the rooms, conversations and opportunities a brand should be entering in 2027, and begin positioning for them now.

Back to Business Month should be about more than returning to routine. It is an opportunity for Caribbean businesses to become more intentional about where they are going and, importantly, what reputation they are building along the way.

Finishing the year strong isn't only about what a business sells between now and December; It's also about what people will believe about that business when the new year begins.
