BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MARCH 13TH 2006 - Twenty-three years after becoming a full member of the Commonwealth, St. Kitts and Nevis renewed its commitment to the organisation on Monday.
"Today we renew our commitment to its shared values of tolerance, respect, and equality and to uphold our fundamental principles of democracy, human rights, the rule of law and sustainable social and economic development,"
said Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, in a statement to mark Commonwealth Day.
Dr. Douglas pointed out that Commonwealth Day 2006 pays special attention to the virtues of health and vitality.
"We recognise that our nations are stronger when there is access to good food, clean water and healthy living. It is in all our interests to work to provide the highest possible standards for Commonwealth people," said Prime Minister Douglas in his message.
According to the St. Kitts and Nevis leader, membership of the Commonwealth "enhances our reputation around the world as it brings a collective dimension to our global interests."
"We, in St. Kitts and Nevis, are much stronger knowing that our one voice has the support of 52 other nations. We know the Commonwealth is a trusted partner and welcome its style of global diplomacy, which uses the power of consensus to make multilateralism work," said Prime Minister Douglas.
He said that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis can feel confident that through our Commonwealth connections "we are stronger."
"Our solidarity is our strength. Our shared values, conversation and institutions provide the platform that build peace and deliver prosperity to all our people," said Prime Minister Douglas.
