BASSETERRE, St Kitts – POLICE have renewed their concerns about the growing presence of electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) on public roads, warning that their unsafe use poses a serious risk to riders, pedestrians and other motorists.
The Police Force acknowledged that these devices offer a convenient means of transportation but cautioned that irresponsible riding can create dangerous situations and increase the likelihood of accidents.
Among the practices causing concern are excessive speed, unpredictable movements in traffic, riding against the flow of traffic, inadequate lighting and failure to wear protective gear.
Police noted that the relatively small size of e-bikes and e-scooters can make riders difficult for motorists to see, particularly at intersections and during nighttime hours. Riders are also particularly vulnerable to serious injuries in the event of a collision. Riding on sidewalks or through crowded pedestrian areas presents additional risks to pedestrians.
The Police are urging riders to obey traffic signs and signals, travel in the correct direction, maintain safe speeds and avoid weaving between vehicles. They are also being reminded to wear properly fitted helmets, ensure their devices are equipped with functioning brakes, lights and reflectors, and refrain from using mobile phones while riding.
Parents and guardians are being encouraged to closely supervise children and ensure they do not use these devices in road conditions beyond their ability to navigate safely.
Motorists, meanwhile, are being urged to remain vigilant, give riders sufficient space when passing and check carefully for e-bikes and e-scooters before turning or opening vehicle doors.
The Police Force also disclosed that draft legislation is currently under review to establish a regulatory framework for the use of e-bikes and e-scooters. Further details on the proposed requirements will be made public as the legislative process progresses.
In the meantime, all road users are being reminded to exercise caution, act responsibly and remain considerate of others.
