Basseterre, St Kitts - As most of us are aware, a powerful earthquake struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. It has been estimated that about three million people were affected by the quake, and that up to 200,000 could be dead. The earthquake caused major damage to Port-au-Prince. Most major landmarks were significantly damaged or destroyed, and most hospitals were destroyed.
The St Kitts Evangelical Association (SKEA) and the St Kitts Christian Council, in collaboration with the St Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, have organized a National Service of Prayer & Protection for the People of Haiti with Mobilisation of Relief Support. This national endeavour will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at St. George’s Anglican Church on Cayon Street , Basseterre .
We wish through this medium to appeal to the general public to participate in this national service in solidarity with the people of Haiti, our CARICOM neighbour. A special offering will be received at the service towards relief and recovery efforts following the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010. These funds will be presented to the St. Kitts Red Cross Society immediately following the service.
We look forward to your strong support of this initiative and also your attendance and full participation in the National Service of Prayer & Protection for the People of Haiti. We also anticipate your generous donation to this worthy and urgent cause. Persons intending to bring their donations in the form of a cheque should write same to The St. Kitts and Nevis Red Cross/Haiti Disaster Relief Fund.
We also invite ongoing intercession for the people of Haiti and the Government of Haiti, as they deal with devastation and destruction that is unprecedented in Haiti or anywhere in the Caribbean in our life times. We solicit ongoing intercession for the responders who will be going into Haiti. It is not unusual for these persons to be plagued with deep depression and exhaustion as they seek to help the injured and dying and as they move people from shock and grief to rebuilding the nation.
Let us pray earnestly for the coordination of the aid that will be flowing into Haiti from numerous sources. Pray for pastors and church leaders who – while dealing with their own shock, grief and loss – will be ministering to everyone around them. Pray for their spiritual, psychological and emotional strength and their daily renewal so that they can minister effectively in this situation.
Let us pray that the country will be able to move quickly from disaster relief to planned reconstruction and that God will grant wisdom to rebuild stronger and better. With God’s help Haiti can rise from this tragedy a stronger and better nation, for the Glory of God.
