Thursday, January 14 – The Elmore Stoutt High School Drama Society invites the public to their 2010 presentation of the play “Marah” by Janice Harris, which will be staged next weekend.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 23 and at 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 24 at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Auditorium.

Drama teacher at the Elmore Stoutt High School Mrs. Janice George Harris told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the objective of the Drama Society is to empower students. “We want to give students a voice and expose them to new art forms and the Drama Society is one such medium,” she said.

The drama teacher added that when some students come to the society they are shy but after a period of time they “blossom into actors”. She explained that “Students gain a sense of identity and become more confident of who they are and the Drama Society gives them that support.”

Mrs. George Harris said “Marah” is written for teenagers and adults, it addresses social issues and is a call to action.  “I know that the play is going to touch the audience.  During rehearsal I am touched and moved by the actors,” she said.

Mrs. George Harris said the play is a “must see”.   Actresses Nadia Turnbull who plays ‘Marah’ and Odesia Daley, the nurse who cares for Marah said they hope the play brings about change in the community and that persons take a stance to address the issue of abuse.

The play gives a moving account of an abused young girl and her journey to forgiveness.  It is through facing her past that the young girl finds strength to overcome her greatest challenge in life.  The play speaks out for those who are hurting, while pointing them towards a way of escape.

Tickets are $10 for high school and college students (with ID) and $20 for adults.  Ticket can be purchased at the Elmore Stoutt High School’s front office, Beacon Bible Bookstore or from members of the Drama Society.
