BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Gaza empire boss, who is one of the most lyrically strapped artiste out of Jamaica, Vybz Kartel, will perform tonight (Jan. 20) at the People’s Action Movement’s Youth Rally. organized by Youths For Change.
The Youth Rally, organised by Youths For Change and themed ‘Increase the Peace Stop the Violence’, will also feature SMI, Dagah, C-Money, Infamus and Evolution Sound.
Vybz Kartel is described as the most talented DJ and hottest commodity to step out of Jamaica with lyrics and flow that are teamed with a unique sound that sets him above many other dancehall artistes.
Although talented, his songs have gone under much public scrutiny for being explicit and violence-encouraged, and he even had one of his hit songs, ‘Ramping Shop’, from 2009 banned from Jamaican radio stations.
The question being asked by many is, “Since Vybz Kartel’s lyrics encourage violence, why is PAM bringing the artiste to perform in St. Kitts at their peace rally?
According to one of the organisers, Vybz Kartel is a very influential artiste.
“He is well known among the youth and a lot of people seem to look up to him. He’s a very influential artiste in music and we thought that he can come here and encourage the youth to stay clear of crime and violence as well as things that are plaguing our country,” they said.
He also said that the artiste, who was born Adidja Azim Palmer , would be censored and has already been given guidelines about his performance.
The action kicks off at 7:00 p.m. and the organisers were given permission to host the event until 2:00 a.m. at the Challengers card court. In 1998, Vybz Kartel appeared at the Champions In Action stage show in Jamaica and was so outstanding in his performance that he caught the attention of Bounty Killer, who noticed the young artiste’s potential.
They were introduced and began working together, as Kartel wrote hits for the ‘Warlord’ including ‘High Grade Forever’, ‘Warlord Rule The World’ and ‘Gal Clown’. With the help of Bounty Killer, he was ready to have his name in highlights, as he produced a number of hits including ‘Tek Buddy’, ‘Life Sweet’, ‘Emergency’, ‘I Neva’, ‘Picture’, ‘Breast Specialist’, ‘Tic Toc’, ‘Bicycle’ and ‘Virginity’.
The majority of the artiste’s songs contain offensive lyrics geared towards women.
Among these songs are ‘More P...y for di buddy’, ‘Pum Pum tight’, ‘Bicycle’ and ‘Virginity’.
Uncannily, with Vybz Kartel’s history, it leaves one to wonder why he is here when just last Friday (Jan. 15) PAM held a concert dubbed ‘Strength of a Woman’.
