Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 16, 2006): Commonwealth Ministers of Sport have agreed on issues of mutual importance and looked at additional strategies to utilize sport in promoting the value of healthy lifestyles, as well as social and community development of Commonwealth territories.

During the 3rd Commonwealth Sport Ministers meeting in Melbourne, Australia, on March 14, the ministers endorsed a report presented by the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport (CABOS) for January 2006. The report highlighted, among other things, the need for closer collaboration among government ministries in helping to promote and achieve objectives for sport and physical education in the Commonwealth family of nations.

The sport ministers and accompanying officials were also updated on the work of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and its ongoing efforts to strengthen its operations within the geographical regions of the Commonwealth and the Olympic family of nations.

A statement released at the end of the meeting also made reference to the significance of hosting major sporting events by countries and their overall contribution to sport development at all levels of society.

This is relevant to St. Kitts and Nevis and the Caribbean region as preparations continue for hosting of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007.

St. Kitts and Nevis was represented at the meeting by Minister of State for Tourism, Sport and Culture, the Hon. Richard Skerritt and his Permanent Secretary Lloyd Lazar.
