BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-WASHINGTON Archibald High School F.C. (Washie) delivered a flat performance last evening (Jan. 21) as TDC Newtown United F.C. marched over them 9-0 at the Newtown Playing Field.
Though Washie finished in second place last season in the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association’s (SKNFA) Digicel Premier League, this season has proved highly problematic for the squad.
Washie appeared to still be finding their legs last night after coming off of the break for the holiday and Carnival season while Newtown was more than ready to prove their dominance and desire to be this season’s Premier League champion.
The first goal of the game was slotted by midfielder Orlando ‘Ack’ Mitchum at minute 9, thus opening the floodgate of goals for Newtown.
Washie was blasted by a hat-trick from captain Ian ‘Rumpy’ Lake in the first half of play, scoring in minute 30 on a penalty kick followed by back-to-back goals in the 43rd and 44th minutes.
Goals were also scored in the first half by midfielder Sashi Isaac and forward Kennedy Isles in minutes 37 and 41, respectively, to give Newtown a massive 6-0 lead by halftime.
Less flash was on display from Newtown after the break as they comfortably controlled the pace of the game, but that didn’t stop Alexis Saddler, Mitchum and Isles from furthering the lead even further in minutes 83, 84 and 88, respectively.
The victory no doubt would send a message to other top contending teams in the league as the first of two rounds of play concludes this month.
Prior to Newtown’s dominating performance, St. Peters F.C. came from behind to earn an important 2-1 victory over KFC Trinity/Challengers United F.C.
Trinity/Challengers captain Sheldon Doyling earned a 1-0 lead for his team in the 26th minute, which they successfully maintained to the break.
St. Peters pushed hard in the second half, however, forcing Trinity/Challengers’ Trevon James to knock the ball into his own goal and equalize the score in minute 57.
Both squads battled to gain the advantage as the minutes ticked off and success finally came in the 84th minute from the feet of St. Peters captain Kenyatha Morton to give his side the victory.
Last night’s results are likely to make for an interesting clash this coming Sunday (Jan. 24) when St. Peters will face Washie beginning at 6 p.m.
Digicel Premier League matches will also continue this Saturday (Jan. 23) at the Newtown Playing Field, where Coury Snapple Conaree F.C. will face 888 Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College United F.C. at 5 p.m. and Rams Village Superstars F.C. will take on Mantab at 7 p.m.
